Balancing the desire to have a beautiful garden with the responsibility of caring for it can be challenging. You want your garden to look nice but don't necessarily have the time and energy to make it happen. Although gardening can sometimes be relaxing, it also has potential to cause a lot of stress when there's a lot to get done. If you like the idea of a garden but aren't so keen on the execution of it, you might want to create a garden that's a little more low-maintenance. With the right design, your garden shouldn't require a lot of care.

Drop the Lawn
Lawns might be the popular option for many gardens, but it doesn't make them the best choice. On top of requiring a lot of maintenance, they're not always great for the environment. If you like the look of a lawn but don't want to look after one, consider compromising with artificial turf. It can give you the look you want without any of the hassle of having to water, mow, aerate, reseed or anything else. Just install your lawn and it's still a fantastic place for children and pets. It's easy to clean and it will last a long time too.
Ditch Finicky Plants
Some plants need more care than others. For a low-maintenance garden, you want plants that don't require constant attention. Avoid anything that's too sensitive or needs to be tended to on a regular basis. Instead, consider native plants that can get along without assistance from you. Evergreens are another great option because they're usually pretty hardy and will give you greenness in your garden all year. You will probably still have to do a little gardening to keep everything under control, but it shouldn't be too often.
Pay Attention to the Seasons
Seasonal changes are worth paying attention to if you want your garden to look good without a huge amount of effort. One of the things you can do is to have plants in pots and swap them out when the seasons change. Once a plant has come to the end of its life or needs to be brought indoors to protect it from the cold, you can replace it with something that will keep delivering colour to your garden. This will help to prevent your garden looking drab and dreary in the winter but still allow you to get away with doing minimal work.
Choose Paving Over Decking
Decking may seem like a good idea when you want to create some outdoor living space. But it can also be pretty high-maintenance, especially if you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain. If you don't want to bother with cleaning, staining and other tasks, consider going with paving instead. You can install a patio that doesn't require much attention and you can match it to any paths or other paving you want to install in other parts of the garden.
Make your garden less stressful by reducing the amount of maintenance you need to do. You can spend more time enjoying it and less time working in it.
